Kajaken in der Verdonschlucht in der Provence im Süden Frankreichs ist ein großartiges Erlebnis, um eine der größten Schluchten in Europa zu entdecken.
Die Verdonschlucht im Süden Frankreichs gehört mit seiner Länge von etwa 21 Kilometern und einer Tiefe bis zu 700 Metern zu den größten Canyons in Europa. Beeindruckend.
Noch beeindruckender ist jedoch das türkisfarbene Wasser des Flusses Verdon, welcher sich gemächlich durch die Schlucht schlängelt.
Bevor wir dir über unsere Erfahrung berichten, erfährst du, wie du zur Verdonschlucht kommst und wo du ein Kajak mieten kannst.
Die Verdonschlucht ist 2 1/2 Stunden von Nizza entfernt oder 2 1/2 Stunden von Marseille. Am einfachsten kommst du zur Verdonschlucht mit dem Auto. Den günstigsten Mietwagen findest du beim Vergleichsportal Discovercars. Auf Omio findest du die günstigsten Flüge nach Nizza oder Marseille. Hotels findest du bei Booking; alternativ kannst du günstige Unterkünfte bei geführte Touren zur Verdonschlucht finden. Wenn du selber nicht zur Verdonschlucht fahren möchtest dann gibt es auch geführte Touren zur Verdonschlucht und den Lavendelfeldern. Kajak, Kanu, Tretboot oder SUP mieten Das Kajak oder Tretboot kannst du vor Ort beim Eingang der Verdonschlucht mieten. Unsere Erfahrung dazu kannst du nachfolgend lesen. Kurz gesagt: Vor allem im Sommer sind die Kajaks und Tretboote oft ausgebucht und für eine limitierte Zeit buchbar. Wenn du eine Kanufahrt oder ein SUP mieten möchtest und das türkisblaue Wasser an einer anderen Stelle, einer weniger überlaufenen Stelle erfahren möchtest, dann kannst du dir hier vorab online ein Kanu oder SUP mieten.

Kajaken in der Verdonschlucht
Während unserem Lavendelroute Roadtrips durch die Provence stoppen wir beim Lac des Sainte-Croix. Direkt am Eingang zur Verdonschlucht.
Nach einer turbulenten Nacht (wettertechnisch) am Parkplatz, der sich direkt am Lac de Sainte-Croix befindet, mieten wir uns ein Kajak. Dies ist neben dem Mieten eines Tretbootes oder SUP die beste Möglichkeit, die Verdonschlucht vom Wasser aus zu erkunden.
Apropo Naturwunder! Wenn du mehr davon in der Provence sehen möchtest, dann kann ich dir die Ockerfelsen in Roussillon und die natürlichen Pools und Klippen der Cascades du Sautadet empfehlen.
Wenn du dies noch nie getan hast wirst du staunen. Zu zweit ist es zu Beginn gar nicht so einfach vorwärts zu kommen.
Die ersten paar Meter ging es für uns eher im Zickzack hin und her. Ich gebs zu. Ich war daran schuld. 😀 Nach ein paar (hundert) Metern waren wir eingespielt. Unter der Brücke hindurch paddelten wir mehr oder weniger unisono in die Verdonschlucht.
Wie tief das Wasser ist lässt sich schwer sagen. Den Grund des Bodens konnten wir nicht ausmachen.
Das liegt wohl daran, dass sich sandfarbener Schlamm abgelagert hat. Er quetscht sich durch unsere Zehen, als wir beim Ufer halt machen.
Beinahe wäre ich drin stecken geblieben. Schwieriger als das Aussteigen ist das Einsteigen ins Kajak. Es wackelt mehr als mir lieb ist. Obwohl ich eine bekennende Wasserrate bin ich froh, dass wir beim Einsteigen nicht kentern.
Vorbei an Wasserfällen und hunderte Meter hohe Felswände paddeln wir nach einer zu kurzen Zeit zurück.
Ich wäre gerne noch weiter in den schönsten Canyon der Provence vorgedrungen, aber leider ist gerade während der Sommermonate Rush-Hour am Anlegeplatz.
Kajak mieten für eine Fahrt in die Verdon Schlucht
Um die Mittagszeit ist vor allem im Sommer die Hölle los. Besser das Kajak oder Tretboot früh morgens mieten.
Dann besteht auch die Chance, das Wassergefährt länger als nur eine Stunde zu mieten. In einer Stunde ist es leider nicht schaffbar, weit genug in die Schlucht vorzudringen.
Gerade am Nachmittag oder abends ist es schön, einfach am Wasser zu sitzen und den Blick auf den Lac de Sainte-Croix zu genießen.
Das Ausleihen ist leistbar und lohnt sich definitiv.
Du kannst auch ein Kanu oder SUP bereits hier vorab online buchen. Allerdings ist dies nicht in der großen Verdonschlucht, sondern ein wenig weiter östlich gelegen. Dennoch kannst du hier das türkisblaue Wasser des Lac de Sainte-Croix genießen!
Tipp: Entlang der Verdonschlucht, vom Ende der Brücke aus, führt auch ein Wanderweg.

Tipp: Wenn du dir die lange Anreise mit dem eigenen Auto von Deutschland, Österreich oder der Schweiz sparen möchtest, dann empfehle ich dir, nach Nizza zu fliegen. Nizza ist eine wunderschöne Küstenstadt, die einiges zu bieten hat. Von hier aus kannst du mit einem Mietwagen die Provence sehr gut erkunden oder du nimmst an einer geführten Tour teil.

Oh wow!! Look at the colour of that water. This is somewhere we want to visit for all the outdoor activities here including Kayaking and climbing too. We are hoping to go and do some kayaking soon but unfortunately not in these amazing surroundings!!

If you travel to the Verdon Gorge and the Lac de Sainte-Croix I would recommend you travel along the Lavender Route too. There are some spectacular views along the route and you see the famous Lavender fields.

…and it´s not the only gorgeous place out there. Close to the Lac de Sainte-Croix and Verdon Gorge is the Lac de Castillon. It is as turquoise and beautiful as the two I mentioned first.

The Verdon Gorge ist one of the most beatiful places i have ever seen! Just visited the Gorge in may. We didn’t kayak, but we hiked a lot. There are many trails with breathtaking lookouts!
That’s true. I was there in August and it was too hot to hike along the Verdon Gorge. It was in the 30+ degrees Celsius range.

Hi Shirley, I was there in summer time but I guess the end of May and June should be fine. As long as you don’t jump into the water (which I wouldn’t do anyways in the gorge du Verdon). The water in the gorge comes from a river and flows into the Lac de Sainte Croix, so it might be cold in May and June.

Hi Shirley, what do specifically mean with: Is it safe? If you’re not sure or scared with kayaking in a gorge or on water in general you can also rent a pedal boat if this feels more safe or comfortable for you.
You can rent a kayak or a pedal boat directly at the Lac de Sainte Croix, close to the bridge that connects the Lac de Sainte Croix lake with the Gorge du Verdon. I’m sure you won’t miss it. There is a parking space next to the lake where you can rent a pedal boat or a kayak.
Oh, I would mean the safety of the water itself. Alrights! Thanks for the advise. How long should I rent the kayak or boat for? If I want to cover most parts of the gorge?
We only had it for 30 minutes because the place was really crowded in July/August. I don’t know how many people are there at the end of May. My suggestion would be to be there as early as possible (if I remember correctly they open the place at around 9 o’clock). Most people starting to arrive at around 10:30.
If I would go there again I would rent it (if possible) for about 1 1/2 hours to be able to enjoy the gorge. But that always depends how interested you’re in nature and the gorge and water itself.
30 minutes was a bit stressful, especially if you want to see a lot of it.

Hi Mishti, I booked them when I was there and I don’t know if you can book them in advance. I would recommend being there early as possible. Most people come at around 10:30 / 11:00.
