The best way to enjoy a day trip to Salzburg is by taking a walking tour. The main attractions are close to each other, which makes it easy to explore Salzburg.

Today, the house is a museum spread over three floors, where you can learn about the life of this musical prodigy.
Mozart’s residence is located on the opposite side of the Salzach near Mirabell Gardens and can also be visited.
I personally preferred Mozart’s birthplace. If you’re interested in his later works, musical instruments, and compositions, you should add Mozart’s residence to your 1-day itinerary.
Lunch In The Old Town
In the historic city center of Salzburg, you’ll find traditional restaurants as well as modern cuisine.
The St. Peter Stiftskeller is the oldest restaurant in Salzburg and in the world. It is also a beautiful location close to the Cathedral and they offer great food.
If you happen to be there during the Christmas season, you can see Salzburg’s most beautiful Christmas tree inside the restaurant.
Besides the Stiftskeller I also enjoy eating at The Green Garden. It’s a small restaurant offering vegan, organic food.
If you want a more traditional restaurant you can check out the Stiglkeller or the Zwettler’s.
The Augustinerbräu Kloster Mülln is a popular brewery and traditional restaurant if you are more interested in having lunch while enjoying an Austrian beer. You could also have dinner there because the 1 day in Salzburg itinerary finishes close to this location.

Afternoon Stroll In Getreidegasse
From Mozart’s birthplace, you can stroll along the famous Getreidegasse, browse exclusive boutiques, or visit traditional craft shops.
Getreidegasse is one of Salzburg’s shopping areas. It not only offers shops but has historical significance as well. The old guild signs and intricate wrought iron works make it a true cultural experience.
Don’t miss the passages and courtyards hidden between the stores.
Alternatively, you can try authentic Salzburg delicacies at Café Tomaselli. The café is aside from Sacher the most famous in Salzburg. They offer cakes and pastries and the famous Salzburger Nockerln.
I also like Café Fürst. Located opposite Café Tomaselli, you can find here the original Mozartkugeln (wrapped in silver foil with blue embossing).
Salzburg Cathedral And Cathedral Quarter
The Salzburg Cathedral is one of the most significant buildings in Salzburg and its imposing presence is hard to miss. The cathedral was first consecrated in 774 and has a long and impressive history.
Inside the Salzburg Cathedral, the baroque artistry is awe-inspiring. The cathedral’s organ is one of the largest in Europe and the frescoes are one of a kind.
When visiting the Cathedral Quarter, you can also climb up to the organ loft in Salzburg Cathedral via the Cathedral Arch Terrace and enjoy a beautiful view of the nave.
A cultural highlight is the famous “Jedermann” play, performed in the Cathedral Square as part of the Salzburg Festival.
Especially during Christmas, the Cathedral Square is festively illuminated, hosting one of Salzburg’s most beautiful Advent markets.
From Cathedral Square, proceed to Chapter Square. Here, you’ll find the Golden Globe with a male sculpture atop it.

Where To Stay In Salzburg
Salzburg offers some truly unique accommodations.
If you want to stay in a castle that was also a filming location for The Sound of Music and is exclusively accessible to hotel guests, I recommend Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron. It’s my personal favorite, especially since you, as a hotel guest, can freely roam through the castle. We spent our evenings in the historic library, enjoying the tranquility. If you prefer to stay closer to the center, then there’s Hotel Am Mirabellplatz. The rooms are traditional, and you’ll be right next to Mirabell Palace and its gardens. Next to the hotel is a public parking garage.
Particularly beautiful is Castle Schloss Mönchstein. Located on Mönchsberg, it offers the best view over the city. Celebrities like Cameron Diaz have stayed here. Schloss Mönchstein also boasts what is arguably the most beautiful infinity pool in Salzburg.
Best Time To Visit Salzburg
You can visit the city of Salzburg all year long. If you want to spend one day in Salzburg, I highly recommend late spring, summer, and early autumn.
This is the best time to walk around the city while enjoying nice weather and comfortable temperatures.
