It’s difficult to list the 15 most beautiful cities in Europe.
Alongside some of the most popular destinations in Europe, here are also cities that are worth visiting, which you might not have had on your radar yet.

1. London in the United Kingdom
At the top of the list of the most beautiful cities is London. Most plan a trip to London for 3 days.
This is enough to get an overview of the best sights and see some of the highlights like Buckingham Palace, Big Ben (Elizabeth Tower), the Tower of London, and Piccadilly Circus.
However, London is not just a popular travel destination for a city trip because of the classic sights but also because of the Harry Potter Studio Tour.
The Warner Bros. Studios are located near London and are one of the most popular and most booked day trips from London.
Additionally, highlights like Stonehenge or Brighton are easily accessible from London. Some of the city’s sights are easily explored on foot.
However, since London is a large city, you will often have to resort to the Tube, as the metro is called here.
2. Amsterdam in the Netherlands
Amsterdam is one of the most fascinating cities in Western Europe.
Its location along the canals, which encircle the city like layers of an onion, has earned it the nickname “Venice of the North.”
The relaxed atmosphere and interesting sights, as well as museums filled with works by world-famous artists like Van Gogh, make Amsterdam a popular travel destination and one of our favorites for city trips in Europe.
The Van Gogh Museum and a canal cruise along the canals are among the most popular Amsterdam attractions.
One day in Amsterdam is not enough, but it is sufficient to see the most important sights.
Since there are a multitude of Amsterdam activities, it is worth staying several days in the capital of the Netherlands.
It’s also beautiful to make a half-day or day trip to the windmills at Zaanse Schans or visit the tulip fields at Keukenhof.

3. Salzburg in Austria
While many would probably name Vienna as the most beautiful city in my home country Austria, I find Salzburg is number 1 among the best cities to visit in Austria.
The city offers many attractions in a small area. Salzburg definitely counts among the most beautiful city trips in Europe.
During a walk through the city, the best Salzburg highlights can be easily discovered.
Due to its location between the Mönchsberg and Kapuzinerberg, there are many beautiful viewpoints in Salzburg.
Among the best attractions of the Mozart city are the Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mozart’s Birthplace, Salzburg Cathedral, and the Salzburg Festival.
The Old Town of Salzburg is relatively small, thus visiting Salzburg in one day is definitely possible.
Also, you can take a day trip from Salzburg to Hallstatt, which is the most beautiful lakeside village in Austria.
4. Porto in Portugal
The “little sister” of Lisbon is considered one of the most beautiful cities across Europe. Porto is the second-largest city in Portugal.
Most would probably include Lisbon instead of Porto on the list of must-see cities in Europe.
Personally, however, I found the city to have more charm.
Highlights in Porto include Port wine tasting in the Port wine cellars on the banks of the Douro River, visiting the colorful house facades around Cais da Ribeira, a 7-bridge boat tour, or a visit to the most beautiful bookstore in the world.
Due to its hilly location, there are many viewpoints in Porto.
These offer fantastic views of the city’s diversity. This is just one of many reasons why Porto is by far the most beautiful city in Portugal for us.
Moreover, the city is a good starting point for day trips from Porto, such as to the Douro Valley and charming coastal towns.
5. Rome in Italy
The capital of Italy is among the most popular attractions and highlights of Italy.
The Italian metropolis is one of the most beautiful capitals in Europe. One of the reasons for this is the ancient buildings like the Colosseum or Pantheon.
But also the city-state Vatican within the Eternal City of Rome offers a special flair. And of course, the Italian lifestyle, the food, and dolce vita make Rome one of the most beautiful cities in the world.

For many, the city on the Seine is a dream destination on their bucket list, as the city is associated with romance, style, and French flair.
The city on the Seine also has a rich history, impressive buildings, and important artworks to offer.
Paris is the largest city in France and has many attractions. Highlights include the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, where the famous work of the Mona Lisa is located.
But also Notre-Dame, the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Paris, Montmartre, and the Champs-Élysées make Paris a unique city. Especially romantic is an evening cruise on the Seine.
From the river, a different side of the city is offered. And the impressive Palace of Versailles also attracts millions of visitors.
Paris is undoubtedly one of the most popular cities in Europe and the world. My last visit to the French capital was a while ago, but it is definitely high on the list of the 15 most beautiful cities. A return visit is long overdue for me.
7. Prague in the Czech Republic
The capital of the Czech Republic is among the most important Czech attractions. Millions of visitors flock to the city on the Vltava every year.
In the early morning hours, the famous Charles Bridge, one of the most popular Prague attractions, is best visited.
During the day, one feels almost pushed across one of the oldest stone bridges in Europe. This bridge connects two areas of the Old Town and is crossed by all visitors.
Nonetheless, the much-visited city has a special flair, and we always enjoy coming back.
Whether it’s for several days or just a day trip to Prague.
Other highlights include Prague Castle, which prominently overlooks the city, and the Old Town with the Astronomical Clock.
Insider tip: In the immediate vicinity of Prague, there are some other attractions and highlights, such as the silver city of Kutná Hora or some of the most fascinating castles in the Czech Republic.
8. Florence in Italy
Florence is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy. Since many of the attractions are located within the Old Town, you can explore Florence in one day.
The streets of the city/the Old Town are closed to traffic, so Florence can be wonderfully explored on foot.
The city of the arts is also a good starting point for day trips from Florence to the most beautiful attractions in Tuscany.
The Old Town of Florence rightly belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage.
Hardly any other city has so many cultural treasures to offer. Whether it’s the masterpieces by Michelangelo, like his David in the Galleria dell’Accademia.
Whether it’s Leonardo da Vinci’s inventions, which can be tried out in the interactive museum, or world-famous artworks like those by Botticelli in the Uffizi.

The city’s landmark, Milan Cathedral, is one of the largest churches in the world.
But not only the Duomo attracts visitors from all over the world, but also a masterpiece by the famous Leonardo da Vinci.

Some of the highlights in Milan include the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the rooftop terrace of Milan Cathedral, and our favorite, the Cimitero Monumentale. This cemetery is one of Milan’s insider tips.
10. Venice in Italy
The lagoon city is also referred to as the city of love, alongside Paris and Verona.
I had the chance to visit Venice during the carnival. The richly decorated masks and adorned robes are a true spectacle, worth experiencing at least once in life.
The journey to the Old Town of Venice is a highlight in itself, as it is only accessible via water.
The easiest way is by bus, train, or tram via a bridge. Cars are left outside. However, a ferry ride is more exciting.
From here, you can already sense the city’s charm. The city of bridges and canals is best explored on foot or during a gondola ride.
Highlights include St. Mark’s Square, the Doge’s Palace, the Rialto Bridge. But also the nearby island of Murano is a popular excursion destination, where the famous glassblowers are located, as well as colorful houses.
11. Barcelona in Spain
The city by the sea is especially shaped by the artist Gaudí. The most popular Barcelona attractions include the Sagrada Família and Park Güell.
The Sagrada Família is a still unfinished cathedral. This is probably the most unique church and one of the most imposing buildings worldwide. A visit to the cathedral is one of the highlights of a visit to Barcelona.
If you like to eat tapas, then you must go to Barcelona. Here, there are small tapas bars offering delicious dishes.
But also at the market in Barcelona, like the Mercat de La Boqueria, there is very good Spanish food.
The Barri Gòtic, the oldest district in Barcelona, is also very beautiful. And if you like to combine a city trip with a beach holiday, then Barcelona is the best choice. Here, there are several sandy beaches.
12. Bruges in Belgium

Besides the imposing castle, the thermal baths, the Chain Bridge, and the Parliament make Budapest a special city.
But also the Hungarian cuisine with lángos, goulash, and various strudels are one of the highlights of a city trip to Budapest.
15. Dubrovnik in Croatia
The polished, smooth stone streets lead through the Old Town of Dubrovnik. The city in the south of Croatia is among the most beautiful cities in the Adriatic area.
Dubrovnik can be very well visited on foot in one day, as the Old Town is very compact.
A part of the city is crisscrossed by narrow lanes. Here, it’s wonderful to stroll.
Especially beautiful is the small harbor within the Old Town. Dubrovnik is located directly by the sea, and there are opportunities from the Old Town to explore the city from the sea.
A particular highlight is a walk along the city walls, as well as visiting the churches within the walls.
Outside the city, the most beautiful islands of Croatia make a trip to Dubrovnik and the Croatian coast very worthwhile. Among Croatia’s top islands are Korčula, Hvar, and Bisevo with the Blue Cave.
