The Cinque Terre region in Liguria is among the most beautiful coastal regions of Italy. Here, densely packed, colorful houses cling to the steep slopes right next to the sea. Just behind, the Cinque Terre National Park begins.

A Hiker’s Paradise in Cinque Terre
This area is a true paradise for hiking, where you wander through idyllic villages high above the Mediterranean coast.
As an experienced hiker (I grew up in the Alps) and an Italy fan, I share my personal experiences and tips to help you make the most of your visit to Cinque Terre.
Hiking in the Cinque Terre: What You Should Know
Sentiero Verde Azzurro with Portovenere in the background
To see the most beautiful places as part of your hikes, you should plan at least three days. Good shoes are essential for hiking.
Pure walking times of 5 hours are not uncommon.
There are also shorter hikes with walking times of 2 to 3 hours.
The hiking trails connect the villages. This means that at the end of each stage, you will pass through one of the villages.
You need the Cinque Terre Card to use the hiking trails. You can buy this on-site at the train station and tourism center. Along the way, you will pass a few “toll stations” where you must show the card.
The hikes are partly strenuous, as the paths are narrow and sometimes lead up many steps. However, the views along the steep coast and the paths along the vine terraces compensate for the effort.
From hidden paths to culinary highlights, you can find everything your heart desires in the region.
The region is breathtaking and rightly counts as one of the most beautiful sights in Italy.
Directly behind the picturesque coastline lies the Cinque Terre National Park.
This national park is part of UNESCO World Heritage.
Here, breathtaking landscapes combine with fascinating history.
The Cinque Terre consists of a total of five villages. These include Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore.
The region is closed to public transport. However, there is a small train station in each town. So you can comfortably move between the places.
The individual places are only a few minutes’ drive apart. The train station is usually very centrally located. After all, there is hardly any space, as many of the places are built directly onto the rocks.
Hiking Trail Sentiero Verde Azzurro
The Sentiero Verde Azzurro is a high trail, also known as the Blue Path. It is the most famous and beautiful hiking trail in Cinque Terre. The legendary route connects the villages of the Cinque.
When you hike the Sentiero Verde Azzurro, you not only have spectacular views of the Mediterranean but also deeply immerse yourself in the culture and life of these unique Italian places.
There are several stages of the Sentiero Verde Azzurro. After each stage, which should be spread over several days, you can comfortably return to your accommodation by train.
These are the most beautiful coastal hiking trails:
Day 1: From Monterosso al Mare to Vernazza
Vernazza
The popular path starts in Monterosso al Mare, the largest of the five villages. Monterosso al Mare is known for beautiful beaches and historic sights.
The path to Vernazza is lined with breathtaking views of the Ligurian coast and the surrounding hills.
Vernazza, my favorite place, is a charming village with a small harbor. Here you will also find the colorful houses by the sea.
Distance: approx. 4.5 kilometers Walking time: between 2 and 3 hoursElevation gain: 250 meters
Route is subject to a fee (Cinque Terre Card)
Day 2: From Vernazza to Corniglia
Due to lack of space, boats are “parked” in the middle of the street.
On the second day, the Sentiero Verde Azzurro leads from Vernazza to Corniglia. This section of the path offers picturesque views and leads through vineyards and olive groves.
Corniglia, the only village of the Cinque Terre not directly on the sea, offers a unique view of the region and is known for wine production.
Here you can choose between an easier, more direct path between Vernazza and Corniglia or a longer one.
Distance: 3.3 kilometers, 6.5 kilometers Walking time: 1 1/2 hours, 3 to 4 hours Elevation gain: 220 meters, 610 meters Route is subject to a fee (Cinque Terre Card)
Day 3: From Riomaggiore to Porto Venere
San Pietro Church in Portovenere
On the third and final day of our hike, it goes from Riomaggiore to Porto Venere. These parts of Sentiero 2 are characterized by breathtaking cliffs and narrow paths along the coast.
Portovenere, the last village on the route, impresses with dreamy views. At the end of Portovenere, there is a rock with a church.
Distance: 12.8 kilometers Walking time: 6 hours Elevation gain: 575 meters Route is subject to a fee (Cinque Terre Card)
Via dell’Amore: A Romantic Walk
love locks at the Via dell’Amore
Between Riomaggiore and Manarola is the Via dell’Amore, the Path of Love. The short, just under 2 kilometers long, easy path connects the places.
Since the Via dell’Amore winds directly along the coast, there are no big inclines or declines. This makes it a pleasant route for a relaxed walk.
During the walk, you will encounter the famous kissing statue. This is a symbol of love and connection. It is a place that attracts lovers from all over the world.
In addition to the romantic symbolism, the Via dell’Amore offers above all great views of the Mediterranean. The path is the perfect place to quietly enjoy the beauty of nature while experiencing the romantic side of Cinque Terre.
My Experiences on the Sentiero Azzurro in Cinque Terre
Sometimes it can get crowded…perfect time for taking pictures.
During my hikes along the Ligurian coast, I chose a slightly different approach. Instead of staying in each of the picturesque villages, I looked for accommodation on the edge of the national park. From there, I hiked the individual sections of the Sentiero Verde Azzurro.
This decision had several advantages. First, I could leave my luggage at the accommodation, which made hiking much easier.
Every day, I started my hike with light luggage, which allowed me to enjoy the breathtaking landscape and the picturesque villages without any burden.
After each hiking section, I used the train, which runs regularly between the towns, to return to my accommodation.
Of course, there is also the possibility of staying overnight in the respective town after each hike. This option offers the opportunity to experience each of the unique places in Cinque Terre more intensively.
But I found my variant better, as the places are not far from each other and it allowed me to leave my luggage at a central location.
Using the train was a convenient and efficient way to move between the villages. It gave me the flexibility to explore new parts of the coastal hiking trail every day without worrying about the logistics of accommodations and luggage transport.
This approach allowed me to experience the beauty and uniqueness of each village while having a fixed retreat.
The hikes along Sentiero 2 were thus not only a physical but also a relaxing, worry-free experience for me.
Best Time to Hike in Cinque Terre: April to Early June and September to Early October
The ideal months for hiking in Cinque Terre are April to early June and September to early October. During these periods, nature comes to life. Moreover, the weather provides perfect conditions for hiking high above the sea.
From April to early June, the trees and flowers are in full bloom, transforming the landscape into a colorful paradise.
During this time, you can hike through vibrant landscapes. The weather is mild, neither too hot nor too cold, allowing for long and pleasant hikes.
September to early October are also great months to explore Cinque Terre. After the hot summer, early autumn offers cooler temperatures and fewer crowds, making for a quieter and more relaxed hiking experience.
The landscape presents itself in warm autumn colors, a beautiful backdrop for your hikes.
Regardless of whether you choose spring or early autumn, it is important to check the opening times of the hiking trails.
Some paths may be temporarily closed due to maintenance work or other reasons. This helps you plan the routes accordingly and avoid unexpected obstacles.
Travel Preparation Tips for Your Hike in Cinque Terre
Pack Light and Efficient
Comfortable hiking shoes: An absolute must for the uneven and sometimes steep, rocky paths.
Water: Especially for longer hikes and warmer weather, you definitely need plenty of water.
Snacks: Energy bars, fruit, or nuts are ideal for refueling on the go.
Sun protection: Sunscreen, a cap, and sunglasses protect you from strong sunlight.

Show Respect for the Local Environment
Leave no trash: Take all waste with you and dispose of it properly.
Preserve nature trails: Stay on the designated paths to protect the natural environment and ecosystems.
Bonus Tip: Explore Genoa and Portofino After Hiking in Cinque Terre
If you have time and desire for a little change after your hiking adventure in Cinque Terre, I recommend a train ride to Genoa.
The historical port city is known for its impressive architecture and rich history. It offers the perfect contrast to the hiking routes of Cinque Terre.

In Genoa, you can give your feet a bit of a rest while still exploring its fascinating sights. The city has a unique atmosphere.
Its old town is characterized by narrow lanes, magnificent palaces, and a vibrant harbor scene.
Another recommendable option is a train ride to Portofino, arguably the most famous fishing village on the Italian Riviera.
Portofino is known for its colorful houses, exclusive boutiques, and azure waters. Whether you choose Genoa or Portofino, both destinations offer a wonderful way to round off your trip to Liguria.

Note: If you happen to be in Cinque Terre, please have a plate of Trofie al Pesto for me. 😉
You really are treated to some amazing views over the coastal villages whenever you go hiking in the mountains and that by itself warrants taking the time to go off exploring! But then of course you never know what sort of hidden gems you may come across on your travels!
It was crowded at this place because it was narrow and steep and some had to rest in between, I guess. But you don´t have to worry that it´s all the time crowded because there are many trails along the Cinque Terre and the coast.
I’ve hiked my fair share in Switzerland but the views are so different. I do especially love the coast of Italy. Never really occurred to me to hike the coast.
I have been to the Cinque Terre several times but I always get too lazy to hike the trails. I blame the beach at Monterosso and the restaurants in Vernazza. I have hiked up to the top of the fort in Vernazza though, although that was to go to the restaurant up there…. Not sure if that counts. I think next time I head back I will have to hike it though. After all this time there is no excuse not to!
I totally understand you. The restaurants in Vernazza and the beach at Monterosso are a great place to spend the day or at least a couple of hours.
I´m sure you will like the hiking too. The next time I am there I want to hike a little and spend more time in the little towns and beaches. 😀
Great blog and photos! I absolutely loved the Cinque Terre and I can’t wait to go back someday to do the walk again! I went in summer and there wasn’t too many people on the trail as it may have been too hot – it looks quite busy in your photos.
I was there in spring and it wasn´t as crowded as it looks like at the picture. It was only this part of the hike where people had a hard time getting up the steep part. Otherwise it was amazing and not too hot. Perfect time for hiking along the Cinque Terre.
Wow 5 hours! But I bet it’s all worth it, the views must be amazing!
The view is great, the food is even better and the little towns along the Cinque Terre are beautiful.
Wow! This place looks gorgeous! I love hiking. 5 hours is nothing, especially with a view like that at the end 🙂
That´s true. It didn´t feel like 5 hours walking because there is so much to see.
This is something I want to do. Is it that crowded for the majority of the walk or only in certain places?
It is not THAT crowded all the time. It was only on this particular place.

How true, Chris. It is worth to stop and explore the beautiful villages. Every one along the Cinque Terre is special and has its own flair.
I have friends who did some hikes there and they were amazed by the beauty of views. me too, I saw the pictures 🙂
I liked it a lot too and it would be great to hike there again and spend more time in the little villages along the coast.
I never knew how crowded the trails can get. The views are totally worth it though!

It´s not what you normally think about when you are at the coast. But it´s the perfect place for hiking if you are at the Cinque Terre.
This is an absolute dream destination for me, Cinque Terre couldn’t be more idyllic. Thanks for the great photos!
Thanks. Hope you will make it to the Cinque Terre soon.
I love the Cinque Terre – one of my favourite parts of my favourite country! As you say, it’s great for walkers.
So far it´s my favorite part too. 😉
My friend is honeymooning there in a couple of weeks, what a lucky duck!
Your friend is indeed a lucky duck. 🙂 Interesting choice for a honeymoon.
Cinque Terre is high up on my wish list. I’ve not been to Italy a lot but this one place seems so different to all of them.
I´m not sure but I think the Amalfi Coast is kind of similar to the Cinque Terre. But you are right. It´s kind of different.
Looks absolutely gorgeous!! I had a ‘Postcard’ from Cinque Terre on my blog a few months back, and I’ve wanted to visit ever since. Amazing views 🙂
It is gorgeous and especially for couples the Via dell´Amore is a great place to spend some time. 🙂
Wouldn’t mind hiking for 5 hours (or even longer!) with a view like that! Sounds like a ‘must do’!
I´m not sure if it´s a “must do” for everyone, Nina, but I can highly recommend it. I would do it definitely again.
