The five Porto viewpoints I’ll introduce are the best and some of Porto’s most beautiful attractions.
Two of these viewpoints are in Porto, two are on the opposite side of the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, and one offers a unique view of the city along the Douro River.

Porto Viewpoints: These Are The 5 Best Spots
Viewpoints are an essential part of any city trip. They give you a great overview of a new destination and often offer stunning views of major landmarks and top attractions.
The viewpoints in Porto are called Miradouros. Miradouro Porto is Portuguese and translates to “Porto viewpoint.”
Since Porto’s attractions are close to each other, it’s easy to explore the city on foot.
The viewpoints are also not far apart.
However, one thing to know when exploring Porto: The city is built on a hill, which means you’ll be going up and down quite a bit. This can get tiring after a while.
My tip: Explore the city from top to bottom, starting at the highest points and working your way down to the riverside.

1. Ponte Dom Luís I Bridge
From the Ponte Dom Luís I Bridge, which connects Porto and Gaia at dizzying heights, you’ll get a fantastic view of the city of Porto, the Douro River, and Vila Nova de Gaia.
You’ll find a stunning viewpoint here after crossing the bridge from Porto and turning right at the end.
In front of you lies the city of Porto, with the Ponte Dom Luís I Bridge to your right and the Douro River flowing below.
From here, you can also see several of Porto’s many bridges.

2. Vila Nova de Gaia
Vila Nova de Gaia is a city located on the opposite bank of Porto.
It can easily be reached on foot via the Ponte Dom Luís I Bridge—either from its lower or upper deck.
Directly from the quay where many port wine producers are located (and where port wine-tasting tours are offered at the port wine cellars in Porto), you’ll have a beautiful view of Porto’s old town.
Walking up the hill into Vila Nova de Gaia, you’ll be rewarded with an even better view of Porto’s historic center.

3. Porto Cathedral (Sé Catedral do Porto)
The Sé Catedral do Porto is just a short distance from the Ponte Dom Luís I Bridge.
The building is one of the oldest in the city and sits prominently atop one of its highest points.
At the back end of its square, there’s a stunning view of both the Douro River and the tightly packed houses of Porto’s old town—all the way to Clérigos Tower.
From this vantage point at the cathedral square, you can also see Vila Nova de Gaia across the river and some port wine cellars along the Douro Riverbank.
4. Clérigos Tower
Clérigos Tower is one of Porto’s main attractions and has been designated a national monument since 1910.
Standing at 249 feet (76 meters) tall with 225 steps to climb, it’s the highest tower in Porto and offers breathtaking views over the entire city.
Because of its location on higher ground, it’s visible from afar and serves as an iconic landmark for visitors exploring Porto.
Tip: Visiting Clérigos Tower is popular, so it’s recommended to book tickets online in advance.

5. Douro River Cruise (My Favorite Viewpoint In Porto)
During this 6 Bridges Boat Tour along the Douro River, you’ll experience a unique perspective of Porto and its surroundings.
The journey takes about 50 minutes. You pass Porto’s old town, head inland under several bridges, and then cruise toward where the river meets the sea.
Besides standing at the end of Ponte Dom Luís I Bridge, this boat tour offers my absolute favorite view of Porto!
