There are two ways to walk from the Bavarian town to the fairytale castle.
You can walk next to the main road from Füssen to the castle or use my recommendation.
There’s a scenic walking route that offers one of the best views of the Füssen Old Town, the Neuschwanstein Castle, and Hohenschwangau Castle.
The walking distance from Füssen to the Neuschwanstein Castle is 3.1 miles (5 kilometers).
It takes about 1 ½ hours to walk the scenic route to the castle.

How To Walk From Füssen To Neuschwanstein Castle
Taking the suggested scenic route instead of walking next to the main street, you will pass along some of the best things to do in Füssen.
Among the highlights are the
- Lechfall Füssen
- Kalvarienberg
- Lake Schwansee
Important to know: Wear light hiking boots or sneakers with a good sole because taking the route leads you up to Kalvarienberg. It’s a hill and you will walk partially on a gravel path.

Starting Point: You can start at the Old Town in Füssen, which is one of the best attractions near Neuschwanstein Castle.
After crossing the bridge across the Lech, turn right and walk until you come to the Lechfall. From there, you cross the street and pass by the restaurant.
Hike up until you reach the Kalvarienberg. It will take you about 25 minutes from the restaurant to the Kalvarienberg.

The top of the Kalvarienberg offers a spectacular 360-degree view of Füssen, Lake Schwansee, Lake Forggensee, and Lake Hopfensee.
You can see the turquoise Lech River and even Neuschwanstein Castle, the Hohenschwangau Castle, and the Alps.

Fun Fact: The Kalvarienberg was King Ludwig II’s favorite place to be, by the way.
After enjoying the view, follow the signs down until you reach Lake Schwansee.
You can take the route as marked in the map, or walk along the left shore of Lake Schwansee and follow the signs through the forest to Neuschwanstein Castle.
