How To Visit The Port Wine Cellars In Porto
The port wine cellars are located in Vila Nova de Gaia, on the opposite side of the river from Porto. (Technically, Vila Nova de Gaia is a separate city on the other side of the Douro River.)
The street along the riverbank where port wines are produced also offers one of the most beautiful views of Porto.
Port wine producers can be reached by foot in just a few minutes from Porto’s old town via the Ponte Luis I bridge.

While port wine tastings are available in some restaurants, it’s much more interesting to go behind the scenes directly at one of the port wine cellars and participate in a Porto port wine tour.
1. Port Wine Tour At Cálem
Cálem is particularly noteworthy for a port wine tasting in Porto.
During a visit at Cálem, the production of port wine is explained. The tours are conducted in English, and before the guided tour begins, you can explore the port wine museum.
This interactive museum shows on an interactive map where the grapes for port wine come from and how they arrive in Vila Nova de Gaia.

2. Cockburn’s Lodge Port Wine Tasting
The tour through Cockburn’s Lodge is guided and ends with a port wine tasting with food pairing.
Cockburn Lodge is the largest port wine cellar in the historic district of Vila Nova de Gaia.
More than 6500 port wine barrels are stored here.
During the visit, you can watch the cooper at work as he disassembles the barrels for maintenance and then reassembles them stave by stave.

3. Burmester Wine Tasting Tour and Food Pairing
The Burmester winery is known for its excellent port wine in addition to Douro DOC (Denominação de Origem Controlada) wines.
The winery has a long tradition that began with Henry Burmester in London.
At that time, he founded Burmester, Nash & Co., together with John Nash. In Porto, they began distributing the port wines produced throughout Europe.

5. Taylor’s Port Cellars with Tasting
Taylor’s Port Cellars, founded in 1692, are not only one of the most prestigious wineries but also one of the oldest port houses.
Disadvantage: If you have difficulty walking, this tour is more challenging as it’s partly uneven and steeper.
The tasting includes two glasses of port wine.
For children, there’s a grape juice from the Douro Valley included.
