1. Choose Your Destination

Travel Planning Checklist: Time-Saving Travel Planner PDF

Planning a trip yourself is fun but involves some work. Before diving into detailed planning, you need to decide on your travel destination.

Everyone has their dream destinations, and it can be hard to choose from a long bucket list. Sometimes, the decision can be spontaneous.

2. Type of Travel: How Do You Want to Travel?

When planning your trip, consider how you want to travel.

It depends on your personality, what’s important to you, and your choice of transportation. Ask yourself these questions:

  • Are you spontaneous and happy with just booking the first accommodation, then finding others along the way?
  • Do you like to be well-prepared with a roughly planned route and pre-booked accommodations but still enjoy some flexibility?
  • Or do you prefer to have every day strictly planned in advance?
  • Do you want to travel freely without adhering to a schedule? Then a trip in your own car, a rental car, campervan, or RV might be best.
  • Don’t mind sticking to schedules? Then consider public transport like buses or trains.
  • Perhaps you want to travel by bike, horseback, or on foot?

Your travel style will shape your planning process.

Personally, I prefer road trips. I enjoy the flexibility of stopping whenever and wherever I want, using my own car or a rental car.

If I see a beautiful spot, I can just stop. Having planned and experienced many road trips, you can find more about planning your own road trip here.

3. Best Time to Travel

A. Travel Time: Best Months for Your Destination

Planning your trip also means figuring out the best time to visit your chosen destination.

In Asia, you need to consider the monsoon season. In southern Africa, like Namibia or South Africa, avoid the rainy season.

Countries south of the equator have opposite seasons to us. Some areas are inaccessible at certain times of the year.

Find this out in advance and include it in your travel planning. Check my website for travel reports, tips, and best travel times for various countries.

B. Duration: How Long Do You Have for the Trip?

The length of your trip also affects your planning.

If you’re working, you only have a limited number of vacation days.

Some destinations might not be feasible for short trips.

Planning a long-haul trip for just a week doesn’t make much sense.

Always consider travel time to ensure you have enough days to enjoy your vacation.

4. Find Sights and Activities (Research)

Once you’ve chosen your destination and travel time, it’s time to decide what sights you want to see and what activities you want to do.

Research travel blogs, guidebooks, Pinterest, Instagram, and magazines for ideas and inspiration.

5. Plan Your Travel Route

Planning your route is crucial, especially for road trips.

Use Google Maps to create your route, and adjust as needed for the best travel experience.

6. Book Accommodations

Depending on your budget, choose from hostels, vacation rentals, B&Bs, hotels, or luxury lodgings.

Use booking platforms with filters to find accommodations that fit your budget and preferences.

7. Book Flights, Rental Cars, and Transportation

If your trip requires flights or rental cars, book these early.

Use comparison sites like Discovercars to find the best deals.

Don’t forget to check if you need a visa for your destination.

8. Book Activities and Tours

Pre-book popular tours and activities to avoid missing out. Platforms like Viator, Expedia and GetYourGuide offer a range of options for different destinations.

9. Get Travel Guides and Maps

Sometimes a travel guide or map is invaluable, especially in areas where digital tools may not work well. Consider guides from Lonely Planet.

10. Pack for the Trip

Packing can be a hassle.

Start with the essentials: documents, medications, and hygiene products.

Create a packing checklist to ensure you don’t forget anything important.
