Yes! As I live close to the famous castle, I know which season is best for a trip to Neuschwanstein Castle and why. Let me tell you that winter is the best time to embark on a day trip to Neuschwanstein.
Neuschwanstein in winter is way less crowded than in summer making it the best season to visit King Ludwig II’s fairytale castle.
Reasons Why You Should Visit Neuschwanstein Castle in The Winter Months
There are some good reasons why it’s a great time to visit Neuschwanstein which was the inspiration for “Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle” during winter.

Less Crowded
The main reason to visit Neuschwanstein in the winter months is simple; fewer people visit the UNESCO World Heritage site Neuschwanstein.
During summer, the Bavarian castle is swarmed by tourists from around the world. More than one million people visit Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany every year.
But during the cold season, the crowds thin out significantly.
You can explore the castle grounds and take photos without dozens of strangers around you.
While the tour inside of the castle still feels a bit rushed, the tour of Neuschwanstein is a lot more comfortable compared to the peak season.
It feels like Winter Wonderland
If you’re on a quest for a magical winter experience, your best shot is to see Neuschwanstein in January or February. While a snowy landscape isn’t guaranteed, when the stars align and the flakes do fall, it’s a magical sight.
Witnessing Neuschwanstein enveloped in snow takes it to a whole new level. Schloss Neuschwanstein in winter transforms into the epitome of a winter wonderland.

Holiday Vibes with Mulled Wine and Christmas Markets
If you visit Neuschwanstein Castle in December during the holiday season, you’re in for a special experience. Many nearby towns, including Füssen, host enchanting Christmas markets. They are filled with traditional crafts, delicious foods, and of course, mulled wine.
With holiday lights twinkling in the background and a dusting of snow all around, you’ll feel as though you’ve stepped into your very own holiday storybook.
Good to know: The Christmas market in Füssen takes place in mid-December (usually around the 8th until the 16th of December). It is situated in the main square of the former Benedictine monastery of St. Mang.
Winter Activities
Beyond the castle, the surrounding Allgäu region offers a plethora of winter activities. From skiing and snowboarding to winter hiking trails, you can turn your castle visit into an action-packed winter holiday.
One of my favorite hikes during winter time is to hike around the Schwanensee Lake and the Alpsee. If you want to do a short walk, hiking around Schwanensee Lake is a great option. From there, you can spot Neuschwanstein.
If you don’t mind taking the longer route, you can hike around the Alpsee lake. It offers stunning views of Hohenschwangau Castle, as well as Neuschwanstein.
Just be prepared to wear good shoes and warm clothes. The path around any of the lakes is not well maintained.
Another great option is to get up the Tegelberg mountain. You can enjoy the view, you can go skiing or snowboarding. You can also go tobogganing. It’s a delightful way to enjoy the winter weather in Southern Germany.
Enjoy Cozy Attractions Nearby
While sitting in a cozy café with a hot cocoa and hearty German food is certainly a classic way to unwind, let’s kick it up a notch.
How about soaking in warm water while enjoying a jaw-dropping view of the royal castles (Königsschlösser)?
My favorite way to enjoy the cold winter evenings is to head over to Kristalltherme Schwangau, one of the best attractions near Neuschwanstein Castle.
It is a thermal bath complex that’s the epitome of winter relaxation. Not only do you get to bask in warm, therapeutic waters, but you also get a one-of-a-kind view of both Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles from the outdoor pool.
Imagine floating in blissful warmth, steam rising around you, while the castles serve as your backdrop.
Now that takes the concept of our way of coziness (Gemütlichkeit) to a whole new level.
So whether it’s savoring a cup of cocoa in a cozy café or enjoying warm thermal waters with a royal view, the winter atmosphere in and around Neuschwanstein Castle is nothing short of a warm hug wrapped in awe-inspiring scenery.
Tips for Visiting Neuschwanstein Castle
Now that we covered the main reasons why winter is the best time to visit Neuschwanstein Castle, I want to share with you my best tips for a perfect day at the castle.
Be There Early
It takes you about 20 minutes to get from the ticket area or parking area up to the castle.
You then have to wait outside at the castle entrance, until you can get inside the castle. If you are too late you cannot enter the castle tour. They are very strict with it, even in wintertime, when it’s less crowded.
So be sure to check your dedicated time on your ticket, and count in the time it takes you to get up to the castle. In case you buy a ticket at the ticket counter, you will have plenty of time to reach the castle. They give you time slots that are at least an hour later or more.
Wear warm winter boots with good soles
The path up to the castle can get slippery due to ice and snow. Most of the time, the road leading up to the Neuschwanstein Castle is well-maintained, but if you want to walk down through the forest, you should wear shoes with good soles.

Even if you take the shuttle bus, I still recommend wearing winter boots. You are surrounded by mountains and the Neuschwanstein is located on a hill.
Views from the Marienbrücke
This bridge provides one of the most iconic viewpoints of the castle but is closed during wintertime. You can still follow the sign from the castle to the Marienbrücke (Marien Bridge). Along the way, you also have a great view of the castle. You don’t necessarily have to be on the Marien Bridge to take a breathtaking photo of the castle.
In case you use the shuttle bus you will be dropped off close to the Marienbrücke. From there, you follow the path and you will be able to take a great shot of the castle.
Use the Shuttle Bus to get to the Castle
In winter, the horse-drawn carriages that usually take visitors up the hill to the castle are sometimes not in service due to the icy conditions. I also don’t recommend doing the horse-drawn carriage.
Even though the horses have their downtime, they still have to pull up the carriage and the passengers up the steep road.
I always walk up to the castle.
If you don’t want to walk, there is a shuttle bus that can take you most of the way up. It departs from the parking area below Hohenschwangau Castle.
The shuttle bus then drops you off near the Marien Bridge (Marienbrücke). From there it’s a shorter walk to Neuschwanstein.
Wear Warm Clothes
Winter in Bavaria can be pretty cold. (I’m talking about up to 5 degrees Fahrenheit / -15 degrees Celsius). The castle is in Southern Germany and is situated in a mountainous region.
You can see the Alps close by. Close to the castle is Füssen, which is Bavaria’s highest town. Yes, it can get pretty cold here.
As you will spend a good amount of time outside it’s crucial to wear suitable clothes. I wear gloves, a scarf, a beanie, warm shoes with good soles and a warm coat.
When you walk up to the castle there is a restaurant where you can warm yourself up. The next possibility to get warm again is at the end of the tour in the castle at the café.
Inside the castle, it is also cold, because there is no heating in most of the rooms.
The only place where it’s warm inside is the area including the café and the shop.

Did you know that the castle was never finished? While Neuschwanstein Castle is beautiful and looks like a Cinderella Castle, it should have looked different.

Visit Hohenschwangau Castle
You can see Schloss Hohenschwangau from the ticket center and the parking areas. It is the yellowish castle nestled atop a small hill.
Hohenschwangau is the summer childhood home of King Ludwig II. His father, King Maximilian II, rebuilt the castle in 1832. Inside Hohenschwangau, you’re transported to a medieval world.
You can walk through the Knights Hall, King Maximilian’s Room with intricate murals of Alpine landscapes, or Queen Marie’s Room with its Neo-Gothic décor.
The Banquet Hall showcases beautiful frescoes. They are inspired by Richard Wagner’s operas and the legends of the Holy Grail.
Besides visiting some rooms, you can also enjoy the castle garden. From there you can see Neuschwanstein.
Bonus Tip: Sleep With A View Of Neuschwanstein Castle
I get asked a lot “Can you stay in Neuschwanstein Castle?” The short answer is: Unfortunately not! But as it is cold and windy inside the castle anyway, there is a much more comfortable option.
You can stay within walking distance of the castle. You can also see the castle from some of the bedrooms in this hotel. The hotel I’m talking about is the AMERON Neuschwanstein Alpsee Resort & Spa.
The Hotel has a fitness center, sauna, and spa center for ultimate comfort and relaxation. It has its own private parking spots, a terrace, a bar, and a restaurant. Some of the comfortable rooms offer views of the Neuschwanstein Castle, Hohenschwangau Castle, or the Alpsee Lake and the Alps.

How To Get To Neuschwanstein Castle
Neuschwanstein Castle is located in South Germany at the border with Austria. The region in Bavaria is called Allgäu. The castle built by King Ludwig II. is best reached from Munich. Especially if you have to fly to Germany, Munich is your best choice.
Another option is the small airport in Memmingen. Memmingen Airport is also called Munich West. If you already are in Europe and want to fly from there to Germany, this airport might be a good option.
- Renting a car
Renting a car is the best option, especially if you want to visit the amazing sights close by. You can extend your trip and visit Palace Linderhof, which I highly recommend.
This palace was built by King Ludwig II. as well. The interior is even more beautiful than the one in Neuschwanstein.
You can also visit Germany’s highest mountain, the Zugspitze when driving around Germany. Having a car is the best option because you’re traveling to a remote area. It’s possible to get there by public transportation, but you have to take into consideration that it will take you a lot of time and some effort.

- Go there by train
The closest train station to the castle is in the city of Füssen. You can take the train from Munich or other cities in Germany. It takes you about an hour to one and a half hours to get from Munich to Füssen.
Once you are in Füssen, you have to take a public bus to the castle. The castle is 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) outside of Füssen.
From the train station in the city center, you can reach the castle by taking bus line 78 towards Schwangau or bus line 73 towards Steingaden/Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
The correct stop is Hohenschwangau/Alpseestraße.

Especially, if you’re in Füssen during a time without snow, we can highly recommend walking there. Be sure to check the weather conditions, and if the hiking paths are open.
- Book a guided tour from Munich
If you don’t feel comfortable driving or you don’t want to take the train and a bus to the destination, you can join this Munich to Neuschwanstein Castle tour. It’s a skip-the-line tour including a transfer from and back to Munich.

How To Get To Neuschwanstein Castle from Munich
The closest international airport to the beautiful castle is Munich (MUC). You can visit the castle during a day trip from Munich.
You can drive to the castle, you can take the train, or you can book a guided tour from Munich to the Castle.
The drive from Munich to Neuschwanstein will take you about 1 1/2 hours.
How To Get Up To Neuschwanstein Castle
Schloss Neuschwanstein is nestled atop a hill overlooking the Alpsee lake and the Allgäu region.
If you drive to the castle, there are parking areas close by. The cost of the parking is about €6 for the day.
If you take the train, the closest train station is in Füssen. From there, you will have to take a bus.
From the parking area and the ticket center area you can walk up to the castle, you can take a horse carriage, or take the shuttle bus which departs close to the ticket center.
Is it Safe To Drive To Neuschwanstein Castle in Winter?
It is safe to drive to Neuschwanstein Castle in winter if you’re accustomed to winter driving conditions. I live just 12 miles from the castle and have often made the trip in snowy weather without any issues.
The key factors are preparedness and the right equipment.
The roads in Germany are well-maintained, even during winter months. Rental cars come equipped with winter tires, making the journey less hazardous.
If you’re comfortable navigating snow-covered streets and taking the necessary precautions like driving cautiously, you should have a smooth and safe trip.
Just remember to always check the weather conditions before driving during winter.
Neuschwanstein Castle Tickets and Prices
The castle is open every day, except for December 24th, 25th, 31st, and January 1st. During the winter months, the castle is open from 10 am to 4 pm.
The tickets for a guided tour (there are no self-guided tours) start at €17,50 for one adult.
You can purchase tickets for one of the most famous castles in Germany at the ticket center in the parking area. You also have the option to book your ticket in advance online.
If you book this day trip from Munich to Neuschwanstein, your ticket is already included.
What else to do Besides Visiting The Fairytale-Like Castle
If you travel to Germany in the winter and you’re looking for things to do besides visiting the king’s castles, you are in for a treat. Close by are already lots of highlights.
Lake Alpsee and Lake Schwansee
Lake Alpsee and Lake Schwansee near Neuschwanstein Castle offer stunning, serene landscapes. They can be surrounded by snow-covered paths ideal for peaceful winter walks, framed by the majestic Bavarian Alps. Lake Schwansee also offers tranquil, snowy walking trails. They might be partially frozen during winter which gives them a magical touch.
Museum of the Bavarian Kings
After your tour to Neuschwanstein, you can visit the Museum of the Bavarian Kings. It is located next to the Alpsee lake and the parking area. The museum offers an in-depth look into the lives and the legacy of the Wittelsbach dynasty. They ruled Bavaria for more than 700 years.
The museum features royal garments and personal artifacts and has interactive multimedia presentations. It’s a great way to contextualize your castle visit. The museum provides a rich historical backdrop that enhances your understanding of this regal family.
Explore Füssen
Füssen, the city closest to Neuschwanstein Castle, offers a blend of natural beauty, history, and culture. There are many things to do in Füssen.
First up is the High Castle of Füssen. The fortress provides stunning views of the surrounding area. If you’re into history, the St. Mang’s Basilica and its accompanying monastery are must-visits.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Lake Forggensee offers boating, swimming, and picnic spots with scenic Alpine views in the summer. In winter the lake is even more special.
During the winter months, there is hardly any water in the lake. This time of the year you are able to see the remains of the Roman street Via Claudia Augusta.
You can also see Neuschwanstein Castle from various spots along the Forggensee Lake.
One of my favorite places to go to is the Lechfall. It is a picturesque waterfall that ends in a canyon.
And last but not least, Füssen is a gateway to the Romantic Road. This road is one of Germany’s most famous scenic drives.
