I stayed two nights at Schloss Leopoldskron castle hotel in Salzburg, and here’s what you can expect from this experience.
Imagine waking up in the von Trapp family villa from The Sound of Music.
Staying overnight in a castle offers a special flair, especially when it’s as exclusive as Schloss Leopoldskron.

Exclusive Access
Exclusivity means the castle is not open to the public. Only hotel guests and seminar participants have access to the grounds and the Rococo-style Schloss Leopoldskron in Salzburg.
The castle also opens its doors for weddings, special celebrations, or events like Shakespeare in the Park or the annual New Year’s Eve gala.
Unlike a museum where signs say „Do not touch!“, as a hotel guest, you can relax in the library or have breakfast in the Marble Hall.
Prime Location
Schloss Leopoldskron is conveniently located. Salzburg’s Old Town is about a 15-minute walk away.
Bicycles available for rent at the hotel get you to the heart of Salzburg in just 7 minutes.
It’s the perfect place to start my self-guided Sound of Music walking tour in Salzburg.

Rich History
The Schloss Leopoldskron was built in 1736 by Prince-Archbishop Leopold von Firmian. The plans came from Scottish Benedictine monk Bernhard Stuart.
It remained in the family for nearly 100 years until Max Reinhardt purchased it in 1918.
Together with Hugo von Hofmannsthal and Richard Strauss, Max Reinhardt founded the world-famous Salzburg Festival.
During Reinhardt’s lifetime, the castle served as a key meeting point for writers, theater producers, actors, and composers from Austria and around the world.
The Sound of Music Connection

Schloss Leopoldskron served as a primary filming location for „The Sound of Music,“ portraying the von Trapp family villa’s exterior.
Key scenes include Maria and the children falling into the lake from a boat, drinking lemonade on the terrace, and romantic moments near the sea horse (hippocampus) statues by the pond.
The Venetian Room’s golden panels and mirrors inspired the film’s ballroom scenes, including the „Lonely Goatherd“ marionette show, recreated in Hollywood studios; a white gazebo from the park (now at Hellbrunn Palace) featured „Sixteen Going on Seventeen.“
As a hotel guest, you have exclusive access to these interiors and gardens as you please, unavailable on public tours.
Suites and Rooms
You can stay in the castle’s 12 suites or in various room categories at the adjacent Meierhof.
Max Reinhardt Suite

The most beautiful and largest suite inside the castle is the Max Reinhardt Suite, where Karl Lagerfeld once stayed with his cat Choupette during the Chanel Métiers d’Art 2014/15 fashion show.
Models like Cara Delevingne walked through the opulent rooms during the show. The suite connects via a secret passage through the library, plus an official entrance.
Meierhof Rooms
The adjacent Meierhof has 55 rooms in different categories, plus reception and the Meierhof Café.
Meierhof guests breakfast in the castle’s Marble Hall. Room rates include breakfast buffet, a bottle of mineral water, WiFi, bike rental, fitness center, seasonal mini-golf, and free entry to the nearby public pool (seasonal).
Parking and EV charging stations are right in front of the Meierhof.
Castle and Gardens

Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron is a peaceful oasis, thanks to its secluded location exclusive to guests and its vast 7-hectare park by the pond.
Stunning views of the garden and pond come from the castle terrace and Marble Hall balcony.
If you’re lucky, you can snag balcony tables for breakfast or terrace seating in good weather.
The Marble Hall, Venetian Room, and library invite lingering. The library, which was my favorite room in the castle, feels like a Harry Potter scene.

Weddings at Schloss Leopoldskron
Schloss Leopoldskron is a popular, often fully booked wedding venue. Civil ceremonies for up to 60 guests start at €1,000; wedding packages for 40-130 people begin at €175 per person.
Couples can marry against the castle backdrop with pond and Untersberg mountain views, then celebrate in the grand rooms. More details on the website.
Conferences and Seminars
The Salzburg Global Seminar, a non-profit founded in 1947, has hosted seminars here since then.
Converted to a hotel in 2014, it now accommodates guests while continuing to host conferences. Half-day packages start at €46 per person (room and catering); full-day from €57 per person.

Prices and Availability
Current prices and availability for Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron vary by season and room type. Superior Suites start around €147 per night; Standard Suites from €227; other rooms from similar rates, including breakfast for up to 2 adults + children under 16.
