Every year more than 1 million people visit Neuschwanstein Castle, the famous castle in Germany. It is also known as the “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Castle” or the Disney / Cinderella castle in Germany.

Castle Neuschwanstein is situated in the southern part of Bavaria, in the Allgäu region, close to the city of Füssen. It is the castle that inspired Walt Disney to create the Magic Kingdom.

As I live 30 minutes away from one of the most beautiful castles in the world, I know everything you need to know about visiting the fairytale castle.

Neuschwanstein is listed on many bucket lists around the world as a must-see. And there is a reason for it. It is special from the outside and the inside as well.

As you explore Neuschwanstein Castle, you’re stepping into King Ludwig II of Bavaria‘s dream. This castle, emerging from the Bavarian landscape in 1869, is a modern creation inspired by the Middle Ages and the musical compositions of Richard Wagner.

King Ludwig, often known as the “Fairytale King,” built this castle as a personal sanctuary, a place for solitude away from the diminishing power of monarchy.

Tragically, he lived in this half-finished castle for only half a year before his mysterious death.

Best Ways to Get to Neuschwanstein Castle

Neuschwanstein Castle is located in the Allgäu region of Bavaria, close to the Austrian border. If you’re flying into Germany, Munich, the nearest major city, is your ideal starting point.

Flying into the Region

Apart from Munich International Airport (MUC), consider the smaller Memmingen Airport, also referred to as Munich West. Particularly if you are traveling within Europe, this airport is a great alternative to Munich.

Besides Munich or Memmingen, your next best option is Stuttgart or Innsbruck in Austria.

Renting a Car

To truly embrace the Bavarian landscape, I highly recommend renting a car. With your vehicle, you have the freedom to explore beyond Neuschwanstein, like the stunning Palace Linderhof, another of King Ludwig II’s creations.

Moreover, a car trip offers the chance to visit the Zugspitze, Germany’s highest peak, and enjoy the panoramic views it offers.

Parking and Costs

If you’re driving, be aware of the parking costs in Hohenschwangau. Planning can help you manage your time and budget effectively. It’s also wise to book your castle visit tickets online to avoid long queues and ensure a smooth experience.

Traveling by Train

If you prefer public transport, the nearest train station is in Füssen. Trains from Munich to Füssen or other German cities can get you to Füssen in about 2 hours. If you want to take the train from Munich International Airport to Füssen plan for 3 hours to get there.

From there, public buses are available to take you the remaining 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) to the castle. Bus lines 78 towards Schwangau and 73 towards Steingaden/Garmisch-Partenkirchen will drop you off at Hohenschwangau/Alpseestraße, close to the castle.

Booking a Guided Day Trip from Munich

If driving or navigating public transport isn’t your preference, consider a guided tour from Munich. These tours include skip-the-line access and round-trip transfers, making your journey hassle-free. If you are interested in exploring both Neuschwanstein and Palace Linderhof which I highly recommend, combined tours are available.

Getting Up to the Castle

Once you’re at the base, there are three main ways to get up to Neuschwanstein Castle:

1. Walking: It’s about a 25-minute walk up a semi-steep hill to the castle. I always chose to walk up either through the forest (simply follow the signs) or the road. If you’re not used to hiking or have mobility issues there are other options for you.
2. Horse-Drawn Carriage: The carriage stop is located close to the ticket center and it stops below the castle. This means you have to walk uphill to reach the castle entrance. Personally, I don’t recommend this way of getting to see the castle. The horses have to carry the carriage and several passengers up a steep road.
3. Shuttle Bus: If you prefer a less strenuous approach you can take the bus. The shuttle takes you close to the famous viewpoint of Marienbrücke Bridge, which is above the castle. From there, it’s an easy downhill walk to the castle entrance.

Book Tickets And Tours In Advance

As you plan your visit to Neuschwanstein Castle, keep in mind that exploring its interior is an experience not to be missed.

To be able to wander through the halls of the palace, you’ll need to join a guided tour.

You can’t just walk up to the castle and buy a ticket. The tours are incredibly popular, and tickets are limited.

To ensure you don’t miss out, book your ticket in advance online. This secures your spot. Booking online is straightforward. 

The tickets for a guided tour (there are no self-guided tours) start at €17,50 for one adult.

You can also purchase tickets at the ticket center in the parking area. 

If you want to explore both Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Palace, consider the combined ticket, currently starting from €23. More information and current prices are available here.

On your ticket, you’ll find the designated time for being at the entrance. Normally, there’s plenty of time before you can enter the castle, but first, you have to walk up for about 20 minutes. Include it in your planning. If you miss your time slot you can’t enter the castle. They are very strict.

What to Expect When Visiting

The castle’s interior is as majestic as its fairy-tale exterior suggests, but here’s something to know: the tour covers only a portion of the castle.

As you follow your guide through the available rooms, you’ll find yourself surrounded by opulence and history. Each room tells a story, rich in artistic detail and historical significance.

However, be aware that many parts of the castle remain unfinished. Ludwig’s untimely death left his grand plans incomplete, adding a touch of mystery to your exploration.

The tour lasts only about 30 minutes and the tour is structured and to the point. Every time I visited the castle, I felt rushed. But that’s the way it is.

Neuschwanstein isn’t just any castle; it’s a snapshot of a king’s dream, partially realized yet stunning in its incompleteness. So, as you walk through its halls, appreciate the blend of finished splendor and unfinished dreams. It’s this unique combination that makes Neuschwanstein a truly remarkable place to visit.

At the end of your visit, make sure to watch the video available for guests. This presentation unveils the construction process of the castle and reveals how it was intended to look.

Surprisingly, Neuschwanstein was meant to have even more towers and buildings than it currently has. This video adds depth to your experience, helping you visualize the grandeur of Ludwig’s complete dream, a vision that extends beyond the existing structure.

Don’t forget to visit the castle’s café after the tour. The prices for drinks and food are reasonable and not overpriced, offering a pleasant break. The café itself has a charming atmosphere, with walls covered in paintings. The windows provide a breathtaking view of Hohenschwangau Palace and the Alpsee Lake. It’s a perfect spot to relax and absorb the beauty of the Alpine region.

However, be prepared for the crowds at Marienbrücke. The popularity of this spot means it’s often bustling with visitors, all eager to capture that perfect shot. That’s why I mostly stay away from the bridge.

But don’t worry, other stunning viewpoints offer equally breathtaking views, and with fewer people.

It’s important to note that the Marienbrücke bridge is usually closed in winter due to safety concerns with snow and ice.

While this means you can’t access this particular viewpoint during the colder months, it also adds to the tranquility and unique beauty of a winter visit to the area. Plus, it encourages exploring alternative viewpoints that are less crowded and just as captivating.

Views from Alpsee Lake

Next, if you have some extra time, take a walk around Lake Alpsee. The serene waters of the lake, coupled with the majestic view of the castle in the distance, create a picturesque setting. This walk offers an escape from the crowds and a different angle to appreciate the castle’s grandeur.

Hill Behind Hohenschwangau Castle

For a unique vantage point, head to the hill behind Hohenschwangau Palace. From here, you can see both Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau nestled in the landscape. I visited this spot at the end of November, and the view was absolutely stunning.

Pöllatschlucht Gorge

Keep an eye on the status of Pöllatschlucht Gorge. When open, it offers fantastic views of the castle. This spot is a hidden gem for those seeking a different perspective of Neuschwanstein.

Shoulder Seasons for Fewer Crowds

Spring and autumn, the shoulder seasons, offer a balance of pleasant weather and fewer tourists. This is the time when you can explore the castle and its surroundings more leisurely. The changing colors of the landscape in these seasons also provide the perfect backdrop for your castle visit.

Winter Visits

Visiting Neuschwanstein Castle in Winter is my personal favorite time to go. The castle, often in snow, looks like it’s straight out of a fairy tale.

While some areas might be less accessible due to winter conditions, the reduced number of visitors makes for a more intimate experience.

If you’re lucky, you can witness the castle covered in a pristine layer of snow, offering a magical view that is hard to match in other seasons.

The queues for entering the castle are significantly shorter, and you might find that you have some areas, like the Cafe-Bistro, almost to yourself.

If you prefer not to wait in long lines to get inside the castle, consider visiting during the winter months.

Alternatively, booking a guided tour from Munich or a skip-the-line package can also help you avoid the crowds.

I personally visited Neuschwanstein and nearby Hohenschwangau Castle twice in winter, following my own advice. The difference was noticeable. Fewer people visited the castles, making the experience much more enjoyable.

Other Seasons

While winter holds a special charm, visiting Neuschwanstein Castle in other seasons is also a fantastic experience. Just be prepared for larger crowds, especially in the summer. The castle and its surroundings are stunning year-round, and each season offers a unique perspective of this iconic landmark.

Your adventure in Hohenschwangau shouldn’t end at Neuschwanstein Castle. I highly recommend visiting Hohenschwangau Castle, Schwangau, and the city of Füssen.

Visit Hohenschwangau Castle and The Museum of the Bavarian Kings

First and foremost, don’t miss out on visiting Hohenschwangau Castle, the childhood home of King Ludwig II. This historic castle, less crowded than its famous neighbor, offers a more intimate glimpse into the royal past.

Füssen is the closest city to Neuschwanstein Castle. It’s one of my favorite cities in the Allgäu region. Schloss Linderhof

About an hour’s drive from Neuschwanstein Castle is Castle Linderhof, another creation of King Ludwig II. This palace, smaller than Neuschwanstein but equally captivating, is set in a beautifully landscaped garden.

Linderhof provides a different glimpse into Ludwig’s architectural style and his love for extravagant and ornate designs.

I enjoy the interior more than the rooms at the Neuschwanstein Castle.

Zugspitze: Germany’s Highest Mountain

Another must-visit spot is Zugspitze, Germany’s highest mountain, approximately an hour’s drive from Neuschwanstein Castle.

The unique aspect of Zugspitze is that part of the mountain lies in Germany and the other in Austria.

You can literally jump between two countries on its summit! Accessible from Garmisch-Partenkirchen on the German side or Ehrwald on the Austrian side, Zugspitze offers spectacular views and a range of activities.
