Still it&#8217;s a country worth considering to visit. Especially a boat trip along the Mekong river is a great place to start seeing this beautiful country.<\/p>\n<p>When I was traveling around Laos, I started the journey by entering the country from <a href=\"https:\/\/morelifeinyourdays.com\/thailand-10-day-itinerary\">Thailand<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The first thing I did was going on a boat trip. After the boat trip ended in Luang Prabang, we traveled around exploring cities and breathtaking nature like natural turquoise pools or historical sites.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Day_1_Chiang_RaiChiang_Khong_Thailand_and_from_Houey_Say_Laos_to_Pakbeng_Laos\"><\/span>Day 1: Chiang Rai\/Chiang Khong (Thailand) and from Houey Say (Laos) to Pakbeng (Laos)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cityseacountry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_2714-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"Along the Mekong - From Houei Say to Luang Prabang\" width=\"642\" height=\"427\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Traveling to Laos is a little adventure. From Chiang Rai in the Northern part of Thailand\u00a0\u00a0to Chiang Khong is a 2 hour bus ride. Being there I had to drag my luggage (suitcase and a hadbag stuffed for three weeks) after the border control down a hill, along a sandbank and on a small, unsteady boat where only a couple of people had to sit one behind the other. After a short trip across the river my wet feet touch Laotian ground.<\/p>\n<p><em>(Update: Now there is a bridge across the Mekong between Thailand and Laos.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Mekong is the natural <strong>border between Thailand and Laos<\/strong>. Dragging my luggage again over sand and up a hill and I am there. At the border control in Laos. You have to wait a while to get your <strong>visa<\/strong> (35 $) and you need to offer a <strong>photo<\/strong>. In Houei Say (Houay Say, Huay Xai, Houayxay) our group gets on our 40 m long boat. It\u00b4s comfortable. There are tables, chair, a huge dining\u00a0table and gladly a toilet.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cityseacountry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_2716-1024x694.jpg\" alt=\"Along the Mekong - From Houei Say to Luang Prabang\" width=\"642\" height=\"435\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We are heading with a speed of about <strong>25 km\/h<\/strong> down the Mekong to Pakbeng (<strong>135 kilometers<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Villages_along_the_Mekong\"><\/span>Villages along the Mekong<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>On our way down the river we stop and visit some villages. Loaded with my luggage again I had to climb up a steep hill to the place my bed was waiting \u00a0for me. The bed and my first roommate. A gecko. At first I wanted to turn around but someone told me geckos live on insects. When I met a big spider in the hallway I was glad about my roommate.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Day_2_Pakbeng_to_Luang_Prabang\"><\/span>Day 2: Pakbeng to Luang Prabang<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Morning_Market_In_PakbengLaos\"><\/span>The Morning Market In Pakbeng\/Laos<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The best way to explore exotic food and products is by going to local markets. The colors, products and odors can be overwhelming in good and bad ways but you should not miss it. The best time is early in the morning to get a real feeling about life in Pakbeng at the Mekong River.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-123 size-full\" title=\"\u24d2 City Sea Country\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cityseacountry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_2801-e1434443157549.jpg\" alt=\"At the Morning Market in Pakbeng, Laos\" width=\"888\" height=\"592\" \/><\/p>\n<div>While I was wandering around trying to avoid to hit my head on the roofs of the market I encountered amusing stuff and things forcing me to turn around immediately. Meat lay on the ground surrounded by flies.\u00a0A Laotian stripped down a bull skull at the end of the market. The sound of cracking bones gave me a shiver.<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I made my way back to a woman and watched her cooking.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-126 size-full\" title=\"\u24d2 City Sea Country\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cityseacountry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_2806-e1434468649639.jpg\" alt=\"At the Morning Market in Pakbeng, Laos\" width=\"888\" height=\"592\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Outside the market a man was carrying a bench while driving his moped, an elderly woman wore socks in her flip-flops altough it was hot and I saw the &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Krating_Daeng\" rel=\"nofollow\">original Red Bull<\/a>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Until this day I had no clue that this energy drink originates from Asia. Maybe because of the fact I don\u00b4t drink energy drinks. In this little village there are three monks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cityseacountry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/IMG_2836-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Along the Mekong - From Houei Say to Luang Prabang\" width=\"642\" height=\"963\" \/><\/p>\n<div data-gyg-href=\"https:\/\/widget.getyourguide.com\/default\/activities.frame\" data-gyg-locale-code=\"en-US\" data-gyg-widget=\"activities\" data-gyg-number-of-items=\"3\" data-gyg-partner-id=\"ASEFBW2\" data-gyg-q=\"Mekong%20River%20Laos\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pak_Ou_Caves_Tham_Thing_und_Tham_Phoum\"><\/span>Pak Ou Caves Tham Thing und Tham Phoum<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Close to Luang Prabang are the two caves Tham Thing and Tham Phoum situated in a cliff along the Mekong. The first is filled with about <strong>5000 Buddha<\/strong> <strong>statues<\/strong>. I was so fascinated by all the different sizes and materials the Buddhas are built of. Monks lived there long ago. The wooden door at the entrance of the cave is richly decorated.In this cave most of the Buddha figures were\u00a0stolen.<br \/>\nAt the end of our boat trip right before Luang Prabang an awesome sunset showed up.
