Caravans must stay outside the center!<\/p>\n<p>We visited Roussillon in the morning and were lucky with parking, which is chargeable.<\/p>\n<p>The village can be quickly explored. There are a few charming shops and restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>You can also stroll to the Saint-Michel church, located higher up in Roussillon.<\/p>\n<p>And if you&#8217;re interested in the history of ochre, you can learn more at the \u00d4khra Ochre Museum outside the village.<\/p>\n<p>To be honest, I wouldn&#8217;t travel to Roussillon just for the village itself.<\/p>\n<p>While the alleys and ochre-painted houses are pretty, I think there are more beautiful areas to spend more time during a Provence road trip.<\/p>\n<p>However, the views from the village and the hiking trails definitely make Roussillon worth the visit.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4986\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4986\" style=\"width: 1014px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4986 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cityseacountry.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Roussillon-in-Provence-France-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Roussillon ochre trail view from the center\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4986\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">View from the center of Roussillon over the orange-colored famous ochre rocks of Provence<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>From Roussillon, which is built on a hill, you get a beautiful view of the Vaucluse region.<\/p>\n<p>You can also see the ochre rocks from here, with their various layers of color clearly visible.<\/p>\n<p>A nature reserve surrounds the village.<\/p>\n<p>Red ochre walls alternate with yellow-brown ochre rocks.<\/p>\n<p>Ochre mining here dates back a long time. It was relatively simple work since the rock crumbles easily.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Sentier_des_Ocres_Hiking_to_the_Ochre_Rocks\"><\/span>Sentier des Ocres: Hiking to the Ochre Rocks<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>From the village center, you can hike directly to the ochre rocks. The route is well signposted. <strong>Admission<\/strong> is required before entering the <strong>Sentier des Ocres<\/strong> (<strong>\u20ac3.50 per person<\/strong>).<\/p>\n<p>There are two circular hiking trails. One is longer, the other shorter. Especially when it&#8217;s busy in the center and on the Sentier des Ocres, you can take photos here without other tourists.<\/p>\n<p>As mentioned, motorhomes are not allowed to park or drive through the village center. It makes sense, as it&#8217;s quite narrow.<\/p>\n<p>If visiting Roussillon with a motorhome or campervan, you can use the parking lots outside the center, like the Motorhome Aire (Parking Saint Joseph).<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Best_Time_to_Visit_Roussillon_in_Provence\"><\/span>Best Time to Visit Roussillon in Provence<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The best time to visit Roussillon depends on your interests. Here are some tips to optimize your stay:<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Spring_and_Autumn_in_Provence\"><\/span>Spring and Autumn in Provence:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Provence is known for its sunny days and mild temperatures, especially in spring and autumn.<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Summer_in_Provence\"><\/span>Summer in Provence:<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;ve been in Provence in both summer and October. In summer, it&#8217;s great if you also want to swim, like in the turquoise Lac de Sainte-Croix near the famous Verdon Gorge. If you enjoy swimming in natural pools or jumping off cliffs, I recommend a detour to the Cascades du Sautadet.<\/p>\n<p>Or if you want to swim in the crystal-clear sea on the C\u00f4te d\u2019Azur. The second time I was in Nice for a girls&#8217; weekend, and we were even able to swim in the pleasant sea in early October.<\/p>\n<p>For the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityseacountry.com\/en\/route-de-lavande-provence\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lavender fields of Provence<\/a>, plan for mid-June to early August<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Roussillon_and_the_Lavender_Fields\"><\/span>Roussillon and the Lavender Fields<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The lavender fields are a hallmark of Provence.
